Romania has been conservative to its gay community like other European countries. But in recent years, this country has made efforts to introduce considerable liberations in the rights of the gay Romania community people residing in this country. Gays are allowed to take part in the activities of the Romanian army and they can also donate blood now.
Although there are curently no legislations aginst homosexuals in Romania, they are denied the right to get married. Rights to get married between the same-gender adults were constituted in the year 1996; these laws were repealed in the year 2001 due to pressure from the countries of European Council. These laws were repealed just some time before the arrival of gay Michael Guest who was the U.S. Ambassador to the country of Romania.
Bucharest’s annual Gay Fest 2008 parade is a very welcomed event by the homosexuals of Romania and is quite popular among them. A drag queen called Miss Travesti is also chosen in the GayFest parade and this contest is quite popular. This event was organized for the first time in the year 2004 and features many events like gay-themed parties, art exhibitions, theatrical shows featuring gay dramas and homosexual film screenings.
Cluj-Napoca’s Gay Community Film Nights festival is another gay event that is very well-attended bythe homosexuals of this country. Now, the right to get married has been granted to the same sex people in Romania in 2007 when the country became a member of the European Union.
